Character
To start I created several mood boards that merged my two concepts, with these as reference, I used a Wacom tablet to sketch fifty variations of rough character silhouettes. These designs allowed me to explore different shapes, features, and weapons. From here, I selected one to further develop.
I worked in a monochrome colour palette and began to flesh out the character design and differentiate what each of the elements were. Once again I drafted several variations and narrowed down the selection to my final concept.
Final Concept
Here I sketched my finished character, prop, and vehicle concepts in detail and accurate proportions.
The Tinmad. Armoured with satanic ram horns, a three-eyed gas mask, and tank, fitted with a skull belt.
Prop. A large rustic axe, equipped with a skill saw and razor blade, wrapped in barbed wire.
Vehicle. A modified satanic motorbike, encased in bones, weaponised with a scythe trap
Photobash
I used Photoshop to create realistic and detailed concepts of my character, prop, and vehicle. I took pre-existing images and photobashed them to create my final designs.
Storyboard
To create the storyboard I started with a rough analysis of my chosen scene and broke down the individual camera shots. This formed the starting foundation for my own interpretation of the scene with my included concept designs.
With the scene analysis as a template, I sketched my rough storyboard and began to incorporate my own concepts and adjusted elements to fit my darker horror-themed context. Here I noted the actions and components of each shot, as well as the camera movements such as pans, and transitions.
SketchUp
With this rough storyboard concept for reference, I took to SketchUp where I brought in assets and recreated the scene in 3D space. This helped me establish space and perspective for each of my shots.
Final Storyboard
I refined this storyboard concept and traced over the Sketchup shots to give me consistently detailed frames. I included colour in several shots to help bring them to life and establish the lighting and mood of the final scene.
In After Effects I implemented the camera movements and transitions in each shot. This created an animatic sequence that mimics how the final scene would play. This process involved a range of skills and how to craft a professional storyboard.
